Touch Typing Training

We have designed this touch typing course to take delegates from the infuriating one- finger ‘hunt-and-peck’ typing style to a more effective, rewarding, accurate and rapid level. When we are paid-to-think, wasting time hunting for each key can interfere with our flow- of-thoughts and thus adversely affect our business productivity. Touch-typing is a life-skill that saves time whilst boosting our ability to express ourselves without interruption or hesitation. It is a core time-management and professional skill valued throughout industry.
The course comprises a systematic series of skill-building touch-typing exercises interspersed with engaging techniques to remember the layout of the QWERTY keyboard. This means that the knowledge can be transferred to getting move value from smart phones and other technology that has adopted the industry standard QWERTY layout.
The programme runs from 9.30am to 4pm utilising in-depth methods of accelerating learning. Regular, short-breaks are used to maintain high motivation and attention.
Being able to use a keyboard efficiently has never been more important. Learn to touch- type can increase your typing speed, improve your accuracy, and enhance your quality of thinking whilst adding the benefit of reducing the ever-present risk of RSI.

There is no pre course work required for this learn to type course.
Research in to RSI by BUPA Healthcare, shows that learning to touch type can reduce the risk of RSI -

The touch type sessions will be entirely practically–based, focusing on training the brain to remember and ALL the fingers to use the correct keying without constantly looking at the keyboard.
Delegates will also learn about good posture at the keyboard, and an effective approach to fast learning which can be applied to other disciplines.
The relevance of touch typing to further keyboard expertise (eg software shortcuts) will be explained.
Session Outcome -
- To have provided each delegate with the skills, knowledge and practice time to be able to touch type without looking at the keys
- To remember and use the correct fingering
- To apply an effective practice regime to build further speed and accuracy on top of these basics
Post Course Support Tool – StarTouch -
StarTouch: puts learning & application first…
- This programme turns the traditional approach on its head by ensuring the whole keyboard and all fingering is THOROUGHLY LEARNT in just one sitting, using engaging, inspiring & memorable techniques.
- This approach equips you to APPLY your new skill immediately and accurately.
- The repetitive nature of it is less of a problem as you’re getting REAL WORK done and SEEING THE RESULTS almost immediately.
- StarTouch is not a software which will need to be installed on anyone’s PC. It is simply a data file that runs under MS Excel/MS PowerPoint(TM) and uses Macros to operate. So, whilst an IT department is very likely to want to vet and approve it, they will not need to be involved in installations or organising administrator permissions.
- The touch typing tool is a standalone programme and as such can be emailed to participants, or stored centrally on a server for them to copy to their own PC. There is no limitation to their using it at home as well as at work (indeed it is encouraged). The touch typing tool is typically time-limited. We can negotiate how long this validity should be for the proposed programme.
NB: the touch typing tool supports the workshop and should only be used by those who have attended the workshop. It is not a teaching tool, and therefore cannot be viewed as an alternative way of learning to touch type.
Expected Results -
No touch typing programme can promise specific accuracy levels, or ‘words per minute’ (wpm) speeds, for everyone who follows the course
People differ in their dexterity, physical control, sharpness of mental reactions, mental processing (of spelling for instance) etc - not to mention the degree to which they apply themselves to the disciplines of practice, and their confidence in their own abilities. However, feedback from previous attendees on this programme suggests the following broad expectations:
- Visually guided touch typing speeds prior to course vary between less than 10 wpm up to (very rarely) 40-50 wpm
- Everyone slows down when they learn the right way of touch typing. Typical touch typing speeds at the end of the day’s training are between 1 and 10 wpm. Few exceed this.
- VERY IMPORTANTLY, though, this will be at 90-100% FIRST TIME accuracy.
Determined and consistent practice after the event, focusing on maintaining accuracy as a priority over speed (using practice regime introduced at the workshop and supported by the software tool) has been shown to deliver:
- 200% to 400% speed improvements,
- maintaining very high accuracy (90%+) within as little as 2 to 3 weeks
